Understanding increasingly diverse and complex life trajectories: Sequence analysis

Authors

Abstract

Despite the steady rise in quantitative sociological research using sequence analysis to explore the increasing diversity and complexity of individuals’ life trajectories, studies have focused disproportionately on Western societies in Europe and North America. This article offers an introduction to sequence analysis in order to address the general lack of familiarity with this longitudinal statistical tool in the Social Sciences in Chile. We examine recent sociological studies conducted in Chile that have used sequence analysis to explore the diversity and complexity of life course patterns in social domains such as education, employment, family, retirement, and healthcare, and in two or more of these domains combined. The article constitutes starting point for researchers and students interested in expanding their knowledge of this technique.
